Pakistan Postage Stamps - 1991

Whenever folk culture and life of Pakistan will be talked about, the name of Ustad (ustad means a maestro) Allah Baksh will stand out prominently. He was the man who immortalized our rural life, and specially of the Punjab – the land where he was born in 1885 in the small town of Wazirabad. His very near-to-life life-size paintings are full of colour, life and people that forces an onlooker to stop in his tracks and appreciate his masterly work of art. [read more at Pakistanpaedia]

To honour this great maestro of art, Pakistan Post in its series of stamps on Painters of Pakistan, issued this commemorative stamp on 29th December 1991.

On the eve of 15th anniversary of RCD, 21st July 1979, Pakistan Post  issued a joint series of three stamps of painting of Turkey, Iran and Pakistan. And the 40p stamp bore the painting of Ustad Allah Baksh as seen below:

Pioneer of Highways in the Subcontinent: Emperor Sher Shah Suri:
5. October: The 520th Anniversary of the Birth of Emperor Sher Shah Suri, 1472-1545

Emperor Sher Shah Suri was the founder of the Suri Empire in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent, with its capital in Sasaram in modern-day Bihar. Sher Shah took control of the Mughal Empire in 1538. After his accidental death in 1545, his son Islam Shah became his successor.  A brilliant strategist, Sher Shah proved himself as a gifted administrator as well as a capable general. He extended the Grand Trunk Road from Chittagong in the frontiers of the province of Bengal in northeast India to Kabul in Afghanistan in the far northwest of the country. [Wikipedia]

The influence of his innovations and reforms extended far beyond his brief reign; his arch foe, Humayun, referred to him as “Ustad-I-Badshahan”, teacher of kings.

Pakistan Post in its series of stamps on Painters of Pakistan, issued two stamps to honour two ustads in water colour paintings: Haji Muhammad Sharif and Ustad allah Baksh on 29th December 1991.
